Institute for the Study of the Ancient World

New York, NY

A newly-created graduate center of NYU, the Institute needed to house a recently donated and extensive library in an Upper East Side townhouse that, while regal, had no designated space for such a purpose. And so the designers dreamed up an ingenious solution – to create space, a portion of the interior volume was carved away and a new structure was built within the old, framing it in structural steel so that the substantial loads of high-density files could be supported easily. The structure broke through the fourth and fifth floor slabs and three new levels were inserted, all as thin as possible to allow natural light to flow. The result – a floating structure resembling the very furniture it houses.
